Who is behind LUMÉ?
My name is Lin Wan, and I founded LUMÉ. I grew up in a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners in Yunnan. My grandfather was a veteran herbalist who practiced in our town for over forty years — everyone called him “Mr. Lin.” Many of my childhood evenings were spent in his small, herb-scented room: along the wall stood row after row of wooden drawers with brass handles, holding angelica, poria, spine date seed, licorice. He used to say every plant has its own temperament, and once you know them, you know how to live well alongside them.
I didn’t understand those words back then. I only remember leaning against the herb cabinet, watching him weigh and blend each ingredient, the air full of a dry, leafy scent, and the Yunnan sky slowly dimming outside the window. That smell later became what “safe” felt like to me — not being protected by someone, but being met, gently, by nature, and slowly allowed to soften.
Later I left Yunnan and came to Hong Kong. Like many people, I turned “holding it together” into a daily routine: schedules, messages, an endless stream of “noted.” For a long stretch I squeezed out even my own evenings — not because I had no time, but because I had forgotten how to stop. One late night after work, I longed for that herbal scent from childhood. I found a few of the gentle plants my grandfather had taught me to recognise and brewed myself a pot. The steam rose, and something in the day finally let go.
